Hehe, I know why I proposed the older Version. Eivind really invested a lot of work into the new version and there were several nice changes but in my humble opinion it is heavily unbalanced. Trade is very crappy and MfG Goods are expensive like hell. Improved Railway system is at the very end of the tech tree, so there is no fast improvement in trade. In the latest Belle Epoque IV game, we just had good outcome, because Dario built the Colossus wonder at Chicago. That was, when he was 12 techs ahead.

So I wanna play the version 3.

I don't see how trade is crappy, seeing as how Italy has almost 100 000 in gold currently in the LBE IV PBEM.

It's better to have people actually focus on which city they are trading with instead of randomly pumping trade into one mega-city, it makes trade more challenging than just getting trade units from A to B.

Smaller nations can actually compete with the larger ones instead of losing the tech race right from the start, and the timeframe for technologies seems reasonable as well.

The world war (I'll just call it that) in that PBEM started around 1916, which seems realistic. And nations like the Ottoman Empire, Japan and Italy can actually compete in terms of weaponry because they could compete in terms of trade due to better trade units.

Additionally, republic seems like a ridiculously overpowered government form, I think the scenario is actually better without it, although an improved government form like communism could have been implemented.

I personally would prefer IV.

Italy just made it because of the Colossus.
After that, with Germany I rushed like 5 Dreadnoughts a round and got outcomes like 6000 with certain trade goods.
But i am open to suggestions. If the others wish, we can also play LBE IV.

I think we should have a vote on which version to use.

My vote goes to version 4.

Reasons:

More balanced trade which requires more thinking and planning.

Smaller nations have a chance to keep up with the big ones.

The Ottoman Empire is needed to prevent an unrealistic early rush for the middle east. At the same time Germany has more chances to survive in an eventual WW1 by merging France with Britain and giving both less cities.

The republic, too strong a government form, has been disabled, preventing unrealistic city growth.

Ships have been weakened to an appropriate level.

The Sun Tzu wonder which gives Germany a huge advantage over others has been disabled.

In this case, newer is better.

Sorry for bumping in, but I presonally think v3 is weaker than v4 in many ways (surprise, surprise! ). Eurisko summed it up pretty good. Basically v3 has an unproportional fast growth, which as it turned out, makes it optimised for weaker players, but seeing that you are all good micromanagement players, v4 should suit you the best. Greater challenge in my opinion makes for more fun. What you eventually end up with I don't care, as I will only spectate this anyway.
