    McMonkey's Eintracht Frankfurt game

As things are so slow here at the moment I thought I would keep myself entertained with a game of Football Manager 2010 (I'm too tight to pay for the newest version!). I thought I would have a go at the Bundesliga and I though some of you guys might be amused by my attempts at managing in your league. If I am breaking any forum rules by posting this non-Civ2 content here please feel free to remove the thread or whatever. Please don't ban me though

I always like a challenge so I decided to play as Eintracht Frankfurt and see how far I could take them. They seem to have a fairly average, mid table team who could be relegation candidates if not handled properly. My transfer budget is £0 and my spare wage money is not more than about £30k per week. It looks like I am going to have to sell to buy and pick up out of contract players where I can. The board want me to finish in mid table and I'm not enclined to try and punch above my weigh as failure to deliver often results in the sack! I have decided to assume Stefan Reuter's identity for this game. I realise some of my decisions may seem odd, but bear in mind I am playing in an unfamiliar league and it may take me some time to adapt.

Looking at my team my best starting XI would be:

*NOTE I'm not able to type umlauts and other German letters, please forgive me

    GK Proll (Nikolov)
    RB Ochs (Steinhofer)
    LB Spycher (Petkovic)
    CB Russ (Vasoski)
    CB Franz
    CM Bajramovic (Meier)
    CM Schweger (PreuS)
    RW
    LW Teber (Kohler)
    ST Amanatidis (Tsoumou)
    ST

Of course I may experiment with different formations, but this will give you an idea of my starting strength.

I plan to sell Mahdavikia, Fenin (I need the money), Zimmermann, Jung, Nadaroglu, Waidmann, Chris, Toski, Heller, Caio, Korkmaz, Lyberopooulos, Vaccaro and Demir if anyone will have them. This should give me enough cash to mould the team to my style. I like my teams to be hard working and determined with plenty of pace and strength.

I will keep you updated on my progress.

Do you guys visit that forum? I can't be bothered to post for strangers. I just thought it might give you guys laugh. It was also a bit of a hint that the forum is very slow at the moment.

By the way, Frankfurt are no world beaters. I think its going to be a long, hard first season!

Feel free to post here or in the Forum Rady suggested. Both is fine with me. I'm pretty sure though that posting here is better for us Civ2ers in general.

I have now been preparing for my first season in charge of Frankfurt for over a week. I have been very busy in the transfer market, wheeling and dealing and I now feel I have a squad that can hold its own in the Bundesliga.

My first action was to find any decent players who were out of contract or transfer listed at a bargain price. I also checked out players who's contracts were due to expire within the next six months and who would be willing to listen to offers.

For me the outstanding free agents were Stephen Appiah, Kamel Miriem, Fabio Santos, Glauber and Illiasu Shilla as well as a young Argentine called Sebastian Nayar. All of these players were offered contracts but only Appiah and Nayar accepted.

    APPIAH

I was very pleased to welcome Stephen to the club. He is a Ghanaean international midfielder with plenty of experience after spells in Italy, with Udinese, Parma and Juventas, and Turkey with Fenerbache. At 28 he is in the prime of his career too.

    NAYAR

Sebastian Nayar is more a player for the future, though he gave a man of the match display on his debut in a friendly. Since arriving he has found it difficult to settle in Germany and I may look to loan him out.

    FABIO SANTOS

Santos is a good solid midfielder in the same mould as Appiah and he was too good not to take on a free. More of a squad player, but could come in handy when the injuries start to mount up!

Next I looked at the transfer listed players and found four in particular that looked promising: Tobias Linderoth and Sabri Sarioglu at Galatasary, Christian Lell at Bayern and Sylvain Marveaux at Rennes.

    SARIOGLU

Sabri was available for £1.2m and offered a bit of pace down the right hand side of the pitch. He can play as a right winger or right back, and in my experience versatility is valuable in this game. I'm not sure why Galatasary was willing to let a young Turkish international leave for such a cheap price, considering he was valued at twice this amount, but I was not complaining!

    LINDEROTH

The veteran Swedish international was available for £500k. At 30 years old he has tons of experience all over Europe and will be an influential member of the team.

    LELL

Bayern were offloading Lell for about £325k, which considering his stats, seemed a bargain. He will provide solid cover for Ochs and can also cover in the centre if necessary. Pleasure doing business with you Bayern!

    MARVEAUX

I think I purchased Sylvain for the wrong reasons. He was only £310k but looked like a much better player than this. The problem is he will struggle to get into the staring lineup at Frankfurt. I may have to send him out on loan in January and try and sell him on at a profit! Useful left sided attacking midfielder.

Before I go any further I will explain how I got the cash to spend on the above players, as well as the bigger money acquisitions I will list below. Naturally I had to let some players go. Some I wanted out, due to their not fitting my style of play or their wages being too high. Others I had to let go as teams were offering me too much money to refuse.

Vasoski (£4m to Napoli), Steinhofer (£4m to Benfica) and Amanatidis (£4m to Barcelona?!?) were three I wold have liked to have kept, but couldn't refuse the money for!

I also sold Nikolov (£1.2m), Toski (£1.2m in installments), Mahdavikia (£1.1m), Chris (£1.9m), Korkmaz (£4.9m to Athletico Madrid), Fenin (£5 to Genoa), Kohler (£1.9m), Caio (£3.1m), Lyberopoulos (£1m for a 33 yr old!?), Tsoumou (£1.5m to Bayern) and Spycher (£2.1m).

I know fourteen first team players is a lot to sell in one summer, and I acknowledge it may not be very realistic, but if there are teams out there willing to take them for silly money so I can bring in my own people then so be it!

Now on to my big money signings.

    CARLOS CARMONA

By far my biggest outlay at £6m, Carmona is a Chilean international midfielder who can play anywhere in the midfield. I must admit I have brought him once before and he is Mr Reliable, always creating goals and scoring a few too. His versatility make him worth the extra few million I had to pay to Reggiana.

    FABIAN MONZON

To replace the departed Spycher at left-back I raided Boca Juniors for Monzon. He has pace, power and determination and is a bit of a set piece specialist. I have no oube he will break into the national team within a few years!

    JELLE VAN DAMME

Alongside him in defence I purchased Van Damme for a bargain £1.4m from Anderlecht. The Belgian international is 6'4" (or 1.94m) and plays at left-back or centre back equally well. Good cover!

    ARON GUNNARSSON

The young Icelandic international midfielder, only 19 years old, was purchased from Coventry City for £2.6m. He is a good all round midfielder with an extremely long flat throw that is almost like a corner kick. Should be a good source of ammo for all the 6'2"+ players (Russ, Van Damme, Franz, Meier 6'5"!) in my squad. In England we have long throw and set piece menaces Stoke City, now Germany has Frankfurt's giants

Next come the strikers. I am planning to play a 4-3-3 formation and use three strikers when I can, so it is important I have a good stable of thoroughbreds!

    PAPISS CISSE

Flavour of the month right now in the real world with Newcastle. I heard he did all-right with Freiburg too I know I'm using the power on hindsight here, but at £2.6m for a young unknown from second division Metz it is still a bit of a gamble.

    KIKIN FONSECA

The Mexican international had a brief spell in Europe with Benfica, but despite being popular with the fans it didn't work out and he returned to Mexico to play for Tigres. I want to give him a second, and perhaps last, chance to show Europe what he can do. His mental stats are just rediculously good. This guy should be a winner. At £2.8m I have paid more than I hoped to, but I'm confident he will produce. He has been scoring freely in pre-season, thought against obscure French and Belgian teams. Scored a cracker against Tigres in a friendly arranged as part of the transfer.

    AMR ZAKI

Controversial Egyptian striker Zaki was signed from Zamalek for £2.2m. Once described as the Egyptian Alan Shearer during his time at Wigan, Zaki is very talented. Unfortunately he has a self destruct button. A bit of a gamble, but if he can concentrate on playing it could pay off.

Finally I have arranged to take on two South American players when their contracts run out in January. I may well move a few players out on loan or sell them then, depending on how they are playing.

    ZE CARLOS

The first is versatile Brazilian who's contract with Corinthians was up. He is a useful attacker and can play all over the midfield and also in defence. His wage demands weren't too high so I thought he was worth a punt.

    JADSON

This is one free signing I was desperate to complete. With his contract at Shaktar Donetsk running out the little Brazilian was attracting loads of attention across Europe. To be sure of signing him I had to offer him pretty high wages, somewhere in the region of £30k per week making him the highest paid member of my squad. I was thrilled when he accepted my offer and can't wait for him to join the squad in January!

I have one more friendly to play before my first game of the season versus Hamburg. So far I am unbeated, but I would have expected nothing less given the friendly opposition. I'm sure the Bundesliga will be a bit tougher!

    EINTRACHT FRANKFURT SQUAD 2009/10:

KEEPERS: Markus Pröll, Fahrmann and Zimmerman (I'm trying to bring in Steffan Wessels on a free but I have no wage money left!)

RIGHT BACKS: Patrick Ochs and Christian Lell

LEFT BACKS: Fabián Monzón and Nikola Petković

CENTRE BACKS: Marco Russ, Maik Franz, Jelle Van Damme and Necat Aygün (free transfer)

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS: Zlatan Bajramović, Tobias Linderoth, Sebastian Nayar, Fabio Santos, Christoph Preuß and Pirmin Schwegler

CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS: Carlos Carmona, Stephen Appiah, Aron Gunnarsson, Selim Teber

ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS: Jádson (in January), Alexander Meier (also striker), Sylvain Marveaux, Ze Carlos (in January), Sabri Sarioglu

STRIKERS: Kikin Fonseca, Papiss Cisse, Amr Zaki

    Hamburger SV (Away)

After easily winning all of my pre-season friendly matches by big margins and my first competitive match in the cup versus Villingen 8-0 I was feeling pretty confident with my 4-3-3 system and decided to stick with it against Hamburg and see how I got on.

Team: Proll, Sarioglu, Monzon, Russ, Franz, Appiah, Gunnarsson, Carmona, Fonseca, Cisse and Zaki

Things did not start well after Mladen Petric scored in the fourth minute. I'm not sure where Russ was. He had completely lost Pertic and it was an easy finish for him. 0-1

I decided to stick to the game plan and it paid off in the twenty minute mark when Gunnarsson got on the end of a superb Cisse cross from out near the left corner. 1-1

With about ten minutes of the first half remaining Cisse, in acres of space, latched on to a long pass from Fonseca. Dribbling the ball into the area he cooly beat Rost at the near post. 2-1

I decide to take things a bit more cautiously and instruct the team to play a counter-attacking game. However this does not help as Petric loses Russ once again and slots past Proll with ease. 2-2

Half time and I decide to replace the clearly nervy Russ with Jelle Van Damme. Ze Roberto has been causing me all sorts of problems and will need to be watched carefully.

Around the 60th minute I bring on Ochs, just back from injury, to replace Sarioglu who is on a yellow card. This will also help Ochs regain full match fitness.

78th minute and the referee decides to give Stephen Appiah a second yellow card for an inoculous tackle (at least thats how I saw it!). The lad didn't deserve that! I'm forced to bring on Linderoth in place of Amr Zaki and go to a narrow 4-1-2-2 formation, still hoping to catch Hamburg on the break as they press for a winner of their own. Almost straight from the free kick Petric hits the post and soon after Proll makes a superb save to deny Paolo Guerrero.

Now my gamble pays me dear. From a corner the ball is cleared to David Jarolim who is completely unmarked and his powerful shot from outside the area deflects past Proll. 2-3

At the final whistle I have a quiet word with the Referee and let him know what I think of the sending off. Decent display but not good enough defensively. I have got to get the players to mark their men more tightly and close down players lurking on the edge of the box. Perhaps that's the downfall of playing three strikers. I will stick with the system for now and see how it works out.

    Final score: 2-3
    League potition: 13th
Man of the match: Mladen Petric
