    [RWL] Afrika und Port Royal

    Hi everybody,

some of you might remember KJ's Mod Slavery Market. The Orient. Port-Royal.
(Parts of "Triangle Trade" from Dom Pedro II were used.)

Currently I am thinking about using some parts of it myself.

    A) Africa

Here it is possible to buy slaves.
No other units can be bought here.

Certain goods can be sold profitably. (Mostly goods like Tools, Weapons, Trading Goods, Alcohol, Cigars, Cloth, ...)

It is not a very good place to buy anything except Coffee, Gems, Indigo and Ebony (Walruss Ebony will be renamed.).
    (Europe is cheaper.)

Going here will take 4 Turns from the New World or Port Royal and 3 Turns from Europe.

    B) Port Royal

Here it is possible to buy criminals.
Also Privateers can be bought here only. (Will not be sold in Europe any more.)
No other units can be bought here.

Certain goods can be bought at quite good prices. (Mostly goods like Coffeeberries, Cocoafruits, Sugar, Natural Rubber ...)

It is not a very good place to sell anything except Rum, Cigars and Weapons.
    (Europe is more profitable.)

Going here will take 2 Turns from the New World and 4 Turns from Europe or Africa.

    C) Loans (Why not... )

    D) Slaves (Yes I know that some people will not like that.)

Slaves can be bought very cheap in Africa but have a lot of penalties.
(I would change a lot of things.)

    - cannot Build Settlement
    - cannot be educated inside the city
    - cannot use "Expert-Mechanism" from LbD
    - cannot be Soldier, Pioneer or any other profession outside city
    - cannot work in buildings
    - cannot be trained in native villages
    - cannot discoverd map
    - cannot enter Goody Huts

    - requires 1 Food per day
    - produces +1 on all tile-professions

With the Constitution Element "Abolish Slavery", which can be chosen after declaring Independence, all slaves will be freed.

    - Slaves can become free (using modified "Free"-Mechanism from LbD).
Player gets a dialog that asks if he wants to buy free the slave (which will cost money).
    - Slaves can escape (using "Escape"-Mechanism from LbD).
    Achtung Spoiler:
Once "Barbarian Civ" is integrated there will be an actual Unit "Escaped Slave" running away.

    E) Slaves and Treasures cannot reveal map or speak to Natives

I am not going to use Orient, because it simply does not fit into my Concepts.

    Reasons to integrate:

    1. I want to have more Ports and more options concerning Trade !
    2. It is simply realistic / historically correct.

    Greatest Challenge:

Getting AI to make good use of this feature.
Maybe I will need to implement some AI-Cheats to simulate ...

This is your personal opinion and you have full right to follow it.

However, every modder has also the right to decide what to include in his own mod, and what does not.

Personally, I consider as a very "strange" position of those who deny the "Slavery" in the game. Really, we fully accept the murdering of natives and total physical destruction of native civilizations in the CivIVColonization. Why? Because it was a part of the colonization history. However, we categorically refuse "Slavery". More than "strange"......

P.S. I'm not going to discuss the "Slavery" question more.
My point is very simple and clear. Everything what really happens in history, can be the subject of modding if you are making a "historically correct" mod.

    Feedback ?
    Couple remarks, if possible.

    1. Not all European civilizations had "Slavery" in the history.

As results, if some of civilizations accept "Slavery", such civilization must have
    - a) the possibility to buy/use in New World/to sell Slaves and get some profit from these operations,
    - b) have a very serious negative effects in relations with all natives and those European civilizations that doesn't accept "Slavery".

Thus, only some goods trading in Africa will be available for European civilizations, that doesn't accept "Slavery".

Maybe, the simpliest way to realize such option is to add in CIV4CivilizationInfos.xml a new tag, something like <AcceptSlavery> with 0 or 1. Thus, if you play for the nation that has <AcceptSlavery> = 1, you can use Slavery.

Probably, more complicated technique will be better. For instance, every nation can buy/capture slaves.
You have even a large number, zB, 5-10 Slaves (you bough or captured them). It means that your nation accept Slavery with some negative consequences.
If you just bought/captured a slave and granted him a freedom, you have no negative effects. Something like this...

    2. Are you sure that this is optimal?

    - requires 2 Food per day
    Maybe
    - requires 1 Food per day

Plus a military (armed) unit must present inside the city if a Slave is working on the tile. If a military (armed) unit is absent, the slave can escape with X% possibility, where X>50-75.

Sorry, but I want to keep some aspects as simple as possible.

    A) All Europeans will make use of "Slaves".
    B) There is a DLL-Event to free slaves for some cash. (I will integrate into LbD.)
    C) With the Constitution Element "Abolish Slavery", which can be chosen after declaring Independence, all slaves will be freed.
    D) Slaves have enough penalties so I will not introduce further penalties for whole Civ for having many slaves.

    Maybe
    - requires 1 Food per day
    No, I am not "sure".
But I fell that only 1 Food per day would make this unit more valuable as I want it to be.

    I want the following:
"Slaves" are cheap labour for plot professions only and a little more effective there than normal settlers.
But they have a lot of penalties.

In short terms they are interesting but in long terms a player will try to replace them step by step.
(Not getting specialists, very unflexible, ...)

    That's it.

I could integrate this aspect in the "Flee"-Mechanism of LbD.

Something similar was made by Kailric in his "[MOD] Medieval: Conquests" for "No Wild Animals" spawning. He used Game options check to ON/OFF this feature. Look here.

    The general problem is:

    • I will implemen AI-Logic to tell AI when to go to Africa and buy slaves.
    • It is not simply spawning, which is a central logic. It is allowing buying, it is LbD, it is ....

The Interface / GUI part I could theoretically take from that mod but this is also work.
For me XML-Option is just as good.

I will know when I start implementing.
